Hack was born at home in the Thorn Gap Community on June 7, 1921, to the late Charlie and Rebecca Jane Bilbrey Qualls. Growing up in Thorn Gap, he would often ride his horse Ol John through the woods to the Spring Creek Community to visit friends. It was there one summer that he met the love of his life, Violet Mae Shaver, at a pie supper at Douglas Chapel Church.
When they came of age, Hack and Violet were married in 1942. Soon after, they moved to Anderson, IN, where both worked in factories to save enough money to purchase part of Violet’s family farm. They accomplished that goal and returned to Tennessee in the late 40s, purchasing 93 acres of land on the edge of Hurricane and Spring Creek. There, they cleared the land and used the timber to build their home, and build their legacy together.
Hack and Violet were very active in their church life. They attended Paran Methodist Church for a short time before returning to Douglas Chapel, where they first met. Hack, along with his close friend Joe E. West and others in the community, helped tear down the old Douglas Chapel Church and build the current one. He even repurposed materials from the original church to construct his large barn, which still stands today, though time has taken its toll.
Hack was well known throughout the Spring Creek Community as a hardworking farmer and a good neighbor. He raised cattle, chickens, tobacco, apples, corn, soybeans, and produced hay that he sold across surrounding counties. Though he and Violet had no children of their own, they were always helping families in their community. Hack was especially known for preparing more than 20 gardens for others.
He took great pride in maintaining his farm and had a special touch in his gardening, often placing pine needles around his tomatoes and beans to keep the weeds down. He would often give the produce grown in his garden to others. Hack loved reading his Bible daily and was faithfully present at Douglas Chapel whenever the doors were open. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, and even riding motorcycles.
Hack is survived by his sisters-in-law, Diana Shaver of the Spring Creek Community, Lorene Qualls of the Oak Hill Community; special family caregivers, Carol Perkins and husband Jack, Diana Shaver, Marie Cooper, Joanie Amoroso, Ed Shaver and wife Kathy; along with nieces Betty Land, Shelby Isabell, Barbara Withers, Patty Kaye Benak, Marie Cooper, Rebecca Qualls, Verrica Smith, Dorothy Webb, Tori Coates, Carol Perkins, and Linda House nephews, Jerry Qualls, Ed Shaver, and Doug Shaver. also neighbors, and friends.
