Speck Funeral Home - Ann Maxine Nivens Obituary

Funeral Services for Mrs. Ann Maxine Garrett Nivens, age 93, of Murfreesboro, and formerly of Allons will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2022, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home.  Rev. Richard Cook, Rev. Don Cartledge, and Rev. Shane Nivens will officiate.  Burial to follow in the Bethel Cemetery. 

The family will welcome friends on Friday evening November 25, 2022 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Speck Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nivens passed from this life in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at 1:15 pm on November 15, 2022 after complications following surgery.  She was born at home in Allons, Tennessee on December 1, 1928, to the late Pascal and Ove Mae Buck Garrett.  A 1946 graduate of Livingston Academy.  She lived a full and productive life raising children, working alongside her husband as a pastor's wife, serving as an interpreter for the deaf and as a piano teacher with many students from Overton, Clay, and Putnam Counties.  With the help of her children, at the age of 85, she accomplished a life-long dream-publishing a book that chronicled her parents' lives and romance here in Overton County, entitled, Sweet Summer.  Her legacy lives on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great grands, and all the lives she touched down through the years.

Mrs. Nivens leaves behind her sons, Gene Nivens and wife Diana of Oak Ridge, TN, Gary Nivens and wife Donna of Johnson City, TN, and Jim Nivens and wife Rachel of Black Lick, OH; daughters, Janie Cook and husband Richard of Allons, TN, Jacquie Cartledge and husband Donald of Lakeland, FL, and Velvet York and husband Edward of Murfreesboro, TN; 18 grandchildren, April, Rich, and Laurel Cook; Chad, Shane, and Justin Nivens; Ryan, Shaun, and Jesse Nivens; Sara and Jonathan Cartledge; Lynn, Cristie, Timothy, Haley, and Katie York; Dylan and Ethan Nivens; 49 great-grandchildren; and brother Edwin Garrett of Allons, TN;

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nivens was preceded in death by her loving husband, Buford O. Nivens and her infant brother, Pascal, Jr. Garrett.
