Speck Funeral Home- Dodie Carter Obituary

Dorothy Leanor “Dodie” Carter was born on Saturday August 29, 1931 in Wytheville, Virginia and passed on Tuesday March 24, 2026 at home in Hilham, TN. Her mother Eleanor Rose Kachelriess Parisi was a homemaker and her father Antony Parisi was in the Army Aircorp and later a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force.


Celebration Of Life for Dodie will be held Saturday March 28th at 2pm from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. The Family will welcome friends at 12 noon until time of services. 


She traveled extensively with her parents in the military and was excited for each new adventure. Due to her constant movement, she attended 36 different schools during her educational journey. 


She was the second of four children. Her older brother Robert Kachelriess and younger sister Marilyn Lashley of Opelika, Alabama and brother Anthony Parisi of Gainesville, FL. Dodie was a loving and devoted mother of six children; James Anthony (Brenda) of Sparta TN, Robert Kenneth “Bob” of Hilham, TN, Gary Michael (Nancy) of Dickson, TN, Jon-Michael, Donald Perry, and Laura Kay Carter Hunley (Mike) of Hilham. She was a doting Nanny to nine grandchildren, James William II (Angela) of Deltona, FL,  Ashley Marie Carter, Bethany Anne Self (Brian) of Erin, TN, Michael Carter of Yulee, FL, Emily Raye Dodson (Johnny) of Dickson, TN,  Kelly Renee Scott (Eric) of Lake Mary, FL, Lindsey Allison Brenner (Jeremy) of Maitland, FL Robert John Carter (Kandace) of Sanford, FL and Carter Allen Muncy (Olivia) of Crawford, TN. She was also blessed to be GiGi to 20 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, a bounty of nephews, nieces and many loved ones that considered her Mom Dodie, 


She was gifted with two very special friends and Caregivers Candida (Jim) Short of Hilham, TN and Tracey Crouch of Algood, TN.


Dodie was a young teen when she and her mother were among the first boatload of civilian Americans to arrive in Germany after the war. While there, on  May 15,1950 she met the love of her life James Carter and married him a year.to the day, later. They enjoyed 71 years of marriage until his passing in 2022. 


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Robert, 2 sons Jon-Michael and Donald and granddaughter Ashley. She enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles however she was happiest when she was surrounded by her family both blood related and those connected by heart strings. Everyone was welcome in her home and at her table. Many memories were made sharing a meal, drinking a cup of tea or coffee and talking. She was an amazing listener, confidant, and advisor. She looked for, found and celebrated the very best in people. 


She loved deeply and unconditionally. She advocated for and championed the under served, overlooked, abandoned and misunderstood. 


A woman of quiet faith, she lived her life serving others.
