Family and friends are warmly invited to visit on Friday evening, December 20, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church to celebrate her life and share cherished memories.

On Tuesday afternoon, December 17, 2024, Bernice peacefully slipped away in her sleep, surrounded by love. Born at home in the serene Lonesome Valley Community on June 2, 1931, to Gilbert Taylor Melton and Maude Dulworth Melton, Bernice spent her life spreading love and kindness, nurturing her family and community with a heart as tender as the flowers she grew.

She married her soulmate, Gene Noel Martin, and their love story became the foundation of a life rich in faith, family, and joy. Bernice delighted in taking care of her home and family, finding joy in her blooming gardens and the bounty of her community-grown produce. She believed in sharing her blessings and opened her heart and home to all who needed a kind word, a warm meal, or a caring friend.

A devoted member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Bernice spent countless years singing in the choir, cooking for church gatherings, and offering encouragement to her neighbors. Her radiant smile and thoughtful words touched everyone she met. She had a gift for making others feel cherished and welcomed, whether they were lifelong friends or someone she’d just met.

Bernice leaves behind a family who adored her and will forever treasure her memory:

Daughters: Shelia Garner (husband Joe) of Chattanooga, TN, and Gail Martin of the Oakley Community.

Grandchildren: Kristy Fox (husband Daniel), Sarah Weber (husband Jason), John Swafford (wife Tina), and Jessica Richards.

Great-grandchildren: Luke, Simon Noel, and Avery Eve Weber; Olivia, Sophia Noel, and William Fox; Kaitlyn and Brooklyn Richards; Samuel and Sun Young Swafford; and Avery and Caitie Scoggins.

A host of beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She is now joyfully reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Gene Noel Martin, her parents, and her treasured siblings: Inez Bilbrey, Jean Collins, Dallas Melton, Champ Melton, Fred Melton, Norma Jean Melton, Herbert Melton, and Reba Melton.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Gore, John Swafford, W.B. Melton, Larry Melton, Daniel Fox, Will Fox, and Sean Collins. Honorary pallbearers include Edward Melton, Michael Melton, Keith McCormick, Sean Collins, and Joe Garner.

Bernice was a woman of boundless grace, a gentle soul whose faith and love shone in all she did. Her life was a reflection of God’s love, and her family and friends were blessed to be wrapped in her warmth. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion, and an enduring reminder of how precious life can be when shared with those we hold dear.

“Her life was a garden of love, her heart a bouquet of kindness, and her spirit a song of joy.”
