Speck Funeral Home - Joy Doreen Hunter Obituary
Mrs Joy Doreen Hunter of Allons, TN, passed from this world with family at her bedside into
Jesus’ loving arms after a long battle with failing health and cancer. Born in the quaint, seaside town of
Troon, Scotland on January 4th, 1947, to parents Arthur and Dorothy(Dot) Hall, she was one of three
children. She fondly recalled many happy hours of biking or roller skating on the promenade with her best
childhood friend Joan. Joy also loved to spend time on the beach with visiting cousins from England and
Wales. Her younger sister wee Carol died tragically at the age of 7, after contracting the flu. This left a
scar that Joy would carry with her for the rest of her life.
Joy married Johnny Robertson and together they raised two children, Barrie and Kerry. Johnny
passed away tragically in a motor vehicle accident, leaving Joy with two young children at the age of 28.
Joy had several different work experiences in her life including, assistant to a dental surgeon, hair
stylist / cosmetologist, child care worker, and quality control technician. Her most cherished job and joy
of her life was being a mother and nana.
She met and married Greg Hill from Lombard, Illinois, who adopted Barrie and Kerry. When
Greg’s employer transferred him back to the United States, Joy packed up her children and moved to
Grand Rapids, Michigan. While living in Grand Rapids, Joy gave birth to her 3rd child Garrett Gregory
Hill. Over the years moves to Michigan, Tennessee, California and North Carolina took a toll on their
marriage. Joy and Greg remained great friends but sadly divorced.
Joy moved back to Tennessee to be closer to her 3 children who always were the most important
thing in her life. While in Tennessee, she would meet and marry her soul mate for the past 22 years,
Howard Hunter. Howard is a caring companion who together with Joy attended every holiday, birthday,
and many other special events with children and grand children. Joy and Howard shared a love of dogs
and rescued many over the years.
Growing up on the West coast of Scotland fostered a life long love of the ocean and beach. Joy
returned many times to Scotland visiting family and friends. She devoted her life to caring for her family.
Generous and thoughtful, she always put others ahead of herself. She loved to shop and give gifts to
everyone, even strangers.
In later years, Joy loved to sit on her back deck in Hunter Cove with beloved husband Howard,
watching wildlife, playing with dog Lucy, and knitting personalized scarves for friends and family. Our
beloved, beautiful, strong, little Scottish lass had a profound effect on everyone she met and will be sadly
missed.
Preceded in death by parents Dorothy and Arthur Hall, sister Carol Hall, husbands Johnny
Robertson and Greg Hill and bonus grandchild Trent Collins.
Survived by husband Howard Hunter of Allons, TN., sister Patricia Donnelly of Alloway,
