Speck Funeral Home - Sam Matthews

Funeral Services for Mr. Sanford "Sam" Matthews, age 81, of  Allons, will be conducted 2 p.m., Thursday, May 6, 2021 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home.  Bro. Nolan Cantrell and Bro. Ed Shafer will officiate.  Burial to follow in the Okolona Cemetery.  The family will welcome friends on Thursday from 12 noon until time of services at Speck Funeral Home. 

Sam passed from this life on Sunday evening, May 2, 2021 from the Overton County Health & Rehab.  He was born in Overton County, Tennessee on July 16, 1939 to the late Elmer and Fanny Bell Boles Matthews.  Baptist in faith, and a carpenter by trade.  Sam was a member of the Mountain Cur Club of Jamestown, TN.  He enjoyed raising and training cur dogs.  He also worked with Mules, winning State Championships.  

Sam leaves behind his sons, Thomas Matthews of Rockwood, TN, and David Matthews of Birmingham, AL; brother, Horace "Doc" Matthews of Algood, TN; sister, Ruby Sherrill; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his brothers, Lee, Owen, Everett, Lawrence, and Hugh Roy Matthews; sisters, Mary Matthews, Ettar Bohannon, Nancy Pugh, and Audrey Matthews.

Pallbearers to serve are Roy Hugh Melton, Rex Melton, Kendrick Melton, Elmer Sherrill, Jerry Shaw, and Gerald Allred.
