Speck Funeral Home - Stanley Carter, Sr. Obituary

Graveside Services for Mr. Stanley Ruffin Carter, Sr. will be held 10 am Thursday, October 8th from Richardson Cemetery with military honors provided at graveside by the Overton County Veterans Honor Guard in honor of his dedication and service.  Bro. John Mabrey will officiate the service.  The family will welcome friends at the graveside.

Mr. Stanley R. Carter, age 90 of the Taylor's Crossroads Community of Monroe passed away on October 3rd in the Overton County Health and Rehab Center.  Mr. Carter was born on November 16, 1929, in Overton County, Tennessee.

Mr. Carter was a very caring father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed his life raising a total of 6 children.  Mr. Carter was best known for making a career in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany, Vietnam, and Korea.  Stanley retired from the U.S. Army in 1975.  After his retirement he spent several years running the store at Taylor's Crossroads for J.D. Coleman.  In addition to running the store he farmed until sometime around 2010.  Stanley also dedicated a great amount of time to the Honor Guard and helped in the funeral services for hundreds of U.S. veterans.  Mr. Carter and his wife of 67 years, Geneva, would spend many hours during the summer and fall months canning fruits and vegetables as well as drying apples in preparation for the winter months.  Some of Mr. Carter's greatest joys in his later years were walking through the woods on his farm and singing obscure songs from his childhood to his grandchildren.

Stanley came from a rather large family that consisted of three brothers and six sisters.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Richardson Carter, brothers Coy Carter, Hoy (Nat) Carter, and Jerry Carter, sisters, Floy Harvey, Marie Sells, Henrietta Leske, and Irene Carter.  He was also preceded in death by one child, Wilma Joan Brown, and two grandsons Jonathan Corey Phipps and Benjamin (Ben) Frederick Jolley as well as two sons-in-law Tom Jolley and Dennis Brown.  He is survived by two sisters Betty Verble and Ann Gabbard, four sons Dr. Willie Joe Carter (Luba), Jimmy Walter Carter (Janie), Dr. Johnnie Clarence Carter (Sherry), and Stanley Carter, Jr. (Chanda) as well as one daughter Mary Jean Jolley.  His surviving grandsons are Michael Carter, Jackson Carter, Cullen Carter, Christian Brown, and Stanley Carter III.  His surviving granddaughters are Amanda (Phipps) Bowman, Alexandra Carter, Jade Cross, Betsy Jolley, Kristen Carter, Bailey Carter, and Cassie Carter.  His surviving great grandchildren Emily (Taylor) Sherman, Evelyn Taylor, Cambrie Cross, Carter Cross, Emmett Ogletree, Garrett Jolley, and Ella Carter.

Mr. Carter has chosen for his burial to be in the Richardson Cemetery where the majority of his family has elected as a place for their eternal rest.
